In 2013 Alan helped to train eight novice female rowers to take on a marathon row. The original plan had been to row across the Channel in May, but bad weather and a subsequent French ban meant a re-think was needed. Instead they took on the Solent marathon row in September, rowing 26 miles from Portsmouth to the Needles on the Isle of Wight. In doing so they raised over £5000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
